Bone density scan

FAQ

ENQUIRE NOW

A bone density scan (also called a DEXA or DXA scan) is a quick, low-dose X-ray test that measures the density of your bones. It helps detect conditions like osteoporosis and assess your risk of fractures. We specifically measure the bone density of the lumbar spine and proximal femur (femoral neck).

DEXA stands for Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry. It uses two X-ray beams at different intensities to measure bone mineral density accurately.

You may need a scan if you are:

  • Over 70 years old (routine screening)
  • Postmenopausal and at risk of osteoporosis
  • Have a history of fractures or bone loss
  • Taking medications that affect bone health (e.g. corticosteroids)
  • Have certain medical conditions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease)

Yes, Medicare covers bone density scans for eligible patients under specific item numbers (like 12320). In general, people aged 70 and over are eligible for a scan every 5 years. Your doctor can advise if you meet the criteria.

Yes. A valid referral from a GP or specialist is required for Medicare rebate eligibility and clinical appropriateness.

The scans typically take 2 minutes. The entire appointment may take around 15 minutes.

No. The scan is non-invasive and painless. You lie flat on a padded table while the machine scans your hip and lower spine.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. However:

  • Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan
  • Wear clothing without metal zippers, buckles, or buttons
  • You may be asked to remove jewellery or metal items

Bone density scans are not recommended during pregnancy due to radiation exposure. If there’s any chance you could be pregnant, let your healthcare provider know

The results are analysed by a qualified radiologist. A full report is sent to your referring doctor, usually within 10 working days.

For most people over 70, scans are recommended every 2 to 5 years depending on risk factors and previous results. Your doctor will advise what’s best for you.

No. The radiation dose from a DEXA scan is very low—much less than a standard chest X-ray or a flight across Australia. DEXA used a very low dose X-ray and you will only be exposed to 1-4 µSv (microsieverts). This is less radiation than you will experience on a flight from Sydney to Brisbane.
