Strong Bones for Life: Why Osteoporosis Screening Matters

Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because it develops slowly over time without obvious symptoms, until a fracture occurs. It affects millions of Australians, especially older adults, and can have serious impacts on independence, mobility, and overall quality of life.

Osteoporosis means “porous bones”, a condition where bones become weak and brittle. Normally, our bones are living tissue, constantly being broken down and rebuilt. But as we age, especially after 50, the balance shifts. Bone breakdown happens faster than bone rebuilding, leading to a gradual loss of bone density. Women are particularly at risk after menopause due to lower estrogen levels, but men are also affected.

Screening is vital because osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a bone breaks. A simple bone density test, known as a DEXA scan, can assess your bone density and detect osteoporosis early. Early detection gives you the opportunity to start treatments that can prevent fractures before they happen. Treatments might include lifestyle changes like exercise and nutrition improvements, as well as medications that strengthen bones.

If you are over 70 years of age, there’s even more reason to act now. The Australian government offers a Medicare rebate for a DEXA bone density scan for those aged 70 and older. This means eligible individuals can access this important screening with little to no out-of-pocket costs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to stay proactive about your bone health without financial burden.

Taking advantage of this government incentive not only helps detect osteoporosis early but also empowers you to make informed choices about your health. Preventing fractures can help maintain your independence, avoid hospital stays, and keep you enjoying life for years to come.

If you or a loved one is 70 or older, speak with your doctor today about booking a DEXA scan. Strong bones are key to staying active, healthy, and independent and it all starts with knowing your bone health status.

Stay strong. Stay independent. Screen for osteoporosis.
